Would You Be Unhappy for Money?
11th-May-2012 10:07 am
Poll #1839681 Money and Happiness

Hypothetical: you are offered a job that pays the equivalent of $50,000 US a year more than your current earnings. The job will require you to work longer hours, work with difficult people (clients and co-workers) and it's pretty much guaranteed that you will hate your job. Do you take the higher paying job?

I'm not sure
Probably not
Definitely not

In answering the previous question, which of the following if any, were a factor in your decision? (Select as many as apply.)

An extra $50K a year would really help me with financial pressures I'm under
Extra money would mean extra happiness in my life away from work
I thrive in high-stress enviornments
I am happy in my current work environment and would hate to leave it, even for an extra $50K a year
I don't like high-stress positions, no matter how much they pay
I would be unable to accept the better paying job because I'm required to avoid stress for medical reasons
I can tolerate a lot of extra grief for another $50K a year
When taking this poll, the song "Price Tag" by Jesse J. was playing in my head
Money is unimportant to me
Money can't buy happiness
Money can buy happiness
Civility is an important value to me
I don't get ulcers, I give them
As much as I would hate taking a job like this, my current financial position would force me into taking it
I wouldn't do it for anextra $50K, but there is a price that would make me take the job (tell us how much in a comment).

Also, that song didn't start running through my head until you mentioned it in the survey, so no ticky box for that!

Wow, you filled that poll out and commented very fast! I'm impressed!

I have to love my job. It's great if a job I love happens to also pay well. But if I have to choose between a bigger paycheck and a job I love, I'll go with the job I love every time.

You lost me at "work longer hours." :P

I'm already unhappy (in general and with my job) so why not get paid more for it?

if i owed crazy amounts of money, maybe, but since i don't, hell no. not worth losing my sanity. i'm already getting paid less than to lose my sanity and i've already decided these are my last few months.

I work 40 hours a week and make just over $20,000 a year with a bachelor's degree. I hate the financial stress, but I love my job! As they say, you become a teacher for the outcome, not the income.

To me, if I'm going to spend a huge chunk of my time and effort and thoughts working, I need it to matter to me and I need to enjoy it.

I currently work an average of just over two days a week, at a minimum wage job. As such my income is less than half of what someone working a full-time 40-hour week manages.
I have no significant desire to earn more money. If I did I'd accept more work at my current employer.

Then again, longer hours for me could still very easily be less than a full work week. And that would be a six-fold increase in my annual income.
I get the feeling I should change my answer to the poll.

I am medically "retired" (similar to the US long-term disability, I think). I cannot work.
