As defined by PCMag.com: (APPlication) The term has been used as shorthand for "application" in the IT community for decades but became newly popular for mobile applications, especially since the advent of Apple's iTunes App Store in 2008.

I see most "apps" as quick cash for developers, regardless of platform... possibly equivalent to old school penny arcades, but with fancier, much more alluring twists, a larger audience, and a sometimes misleading price tag. The term has become widely overused, and many "apps" aren't even worth a penny. That isn't to say profit isn't sometimes deserved... just that most of the time it isn't. A lot of people seem to have an unhealthy obsession with them, regardless of use, because "it's only a dollar." $200 later they're convinced their paycheck has miraculously shrunk... as they download one more app to help them figure out why.

Don't get me wrong... I love apps. It's just that once I realize there's a price tag attached to one, no matter how much I think I want it, in that split second it takes for me to enter in my debit card number, I take into account all of my other interests and the actual use I'll get out of it. Most don't make the cut.... no matter how cheap they are. I usually tell myself if I still want it by the end of the week, I'll get it. Most of the time, I've forgotten about it by the end of the day.

I am willing to pay for an app, but only if it's worth the price.

The thing I've noticed is, pretty much no matter what app you're looking at, there's a similar free one that works just as well.

As someone in the roleplay community, I thought at first you meant something quite different by the word "app" (which is shorthand for an application to play in an LJ RPG, as in a form you fill out, not a program or utility).

I'm assuming that for the purposes of this poll, you're strictly talking about apps for mobile devices and NOT desktop computers and the like?

I'd say mostly for mobile devices, but also anything that can be purchased in an "app" store, attached to a social networking page (like Facebook), etc. Not larger computer applications.

Ah, I see. So in other words, my wishful thinking for a Firefox port for BlackBerry and an LJLogin, Adblock Plus, and NoScript extensions (and Lazarus would be nice, too, because I keep losing my text in text entry boxes), that would work with it wouldn't count. XD Aside from that, I really couldn't care less about things like Facebook apps and such because I don't use Facebook, etc. =P

I don't own a smartphone or tablet or any such thing. The only app I've done anything with at all recently is Dragon Age Legends on Facebook.

I recently discovered that mac computers have an app store now. Ohhhh that was a bad thing to discover. There are so many useful things on there, and so many of them are free (and the ones that aren't free are so expensive that I would never consider using them anyway).

The app I couldn't possibly live without? Tweetdeck. :-) The only combined Twitter/Facebook app for Android that works properly. As for why I couldn't live without it, I work out on the road alone, and it keeps me in touch with my friends and stops me going crazy.

Plus I can keep in easy contact with friends I only see once a year or so.
