Wolf- Fantastic Mr. Fox
Based on the true story upon which the movie 127 Hours is based, about a man who amputated his own hand after it was trapped under an 800-pound boulder.

You are trapped in a slot canyon with your hand under a boulder that won't budge. You are out of food and water with little hope of rescue. Do you attempt to cut your own hand off, breaking the wrist bones if necessary, to get out?

I'm not sure
No way
I don't want to think about it

I watch a few shows: I survived..., I Shouldn't Be Alive, Escaped and I am forgetting one; they're about surviving terrible situations if you couldn't tell. In some of the stories they are trapped in situations where they have to cut an arm or leg off to survive. Just from these real personal accounts of what they went through, I know I could do it.
I'm looking forward to seeing this movie! I'm sure Mr. Franco did an excellent job.

Those situations must be rare, but what I wonder is how people manage not to go into shock afterwards.

Oh yes, the movie is very good.

You do what you have to survive and you never know what you're capable of until you have to make the choice.

I would like to think I'd have the courage to do it, but I just don't know. Hope I don't ever have to find out!

I hope to never be in a situation like that, and Aron Ralston's situation could have been avoided by telling someone where he was going. But in that situation, I think my will to live is strong enough to do it. I'd be afraid of the pain, but it would be a choice between temporary excruciating pain and a possible second chance at life, and permanently being dead.

And besides, if my hand is trapped that badly under a boulder I can't budge, it's likely as good as unsalvageable, so might as well amputate it for a better chance of survival.

this sort of thing has happened a few times, i collect newspaper articles about it, because i know damn well my will to live is just not that strong so they amaze me. there have been people that have cut off their leg, and people who have cut off their arm/hand.

for the commenters who say "you do what you have to do to survive" we really don't ALL have THAT strong of a survival instinct. You hear a lot about animals caught in traps who chew off their foot to escape, but not so much about the 95% who don't and thus make up the fur industry.
