Who are these people?
29th-Dec-2010 10:51 pm (UTC)
The internet and especially websites that give exposure to independent artists has meant that there are fewer and fewer well known musical artists. Before the net, people heard their music from only a few well-filtered sources: mainly radio and later tv, and to a lesser extent clubs. But now the internet has given people an almost infinite number of places to find their music with an infinite number of artists to chose from.
29th-Dec-2010 10:56 pm (UTC)
Yes, thank you. I know what the internet is. But when you post a popular culture poll, don't expect everybody to be just out of high school and listening to whatever Disney Channel drivel is "popular."

I recognise maybe three names on this entire list, but haven't heard any of the albums listed. I asked who these people are because I honestly do not know. I've never heard of them, and frankly, all the records on the radio these days sound exactly the same.
29th-Dec-2010 11:03 pm (UTC)
I assumed you knew what the internet was, and didn't expect you would take such offence at my discussion of why many of these names are unfamiliar to many of us.
29th-Dec-2010 11:06 pm (UTC)
I can't really answer this poll, like, at all. XD I guess I was under a rock all year, lol.
30th-Dec-2010 01:55 am (UTC)
Me too.
30th-Dec-2010 02:20 am (UTC)
Same here. Then again-- from the little I've heard of contemporary mainstream music-- I'm not really missing a great deal.
30th-Dec-2010 04:22 pm (UTC)

Same here.

I pretty much stopped listening to the radio and watching the 'video' channels years ago, especially when every musical artist that came on sounded exactly like the one before them. Or maybe I am getting too old and cynical. lol
29th-Dec-2010 11:29 pm (UTC)
Never heard of any of these. My music knowledge is limited to pretty much anything that predates 1990 or thereabouts, and some limited old skool video game music.
29th-Dec-2010 11:31 pm (UTC)
Unsurprisingly, my three favorite albums of the year are nowhere on this list.
29th-Dec-2010 11:34 pm (UTC)
What are they? (Inquiring minds want to know.)

In no particular order, since I think they all have merit:

Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys by My Chemical Romance
Invented - Jimmy Eat World
Tron: Legacy s/t - Daft Punk

I don't listen to albums...I'm barely aware that people even release albums anymore. I am firmly rooted in the culture that dictates I only listen to/buy singles.
30th-Dec-2010 01:22 am (UTC)
This comment makes me sad. :(
30th-Dec-2010 06:47 am (UTC)
Well, I'm not going to pay $15 for songs I don't even know if I'll like. :( I'm a poor college student.
30th-Dec-2010 08:57 am (UTC)
well thats why you can go in a shop and listen to the songs in a listening station, at least in Germany you can.
30th-Dec-2010 06:41 pm (UTC)
Fair enough. I guess I mostly buy singles too; I've always been selective about the actual CDs I buy, but my favorite artists never disappoint so there's something magical about hearing a new song from one of them and knowing there are 10 or 12+ more just waiting to be unwrapped.
30th-Dec-2010 03:55 pm (UTC)
I would have to agree.
29th-Dec-2010 11:48 pm (UTC)
PotD and those that come here haven't changed a bit.
30th-Dec-2010 06:25 am (UTC)
I really liked your answers in all of the text entry questions.
30th-Dec-2010 01:27 am (UTC)
I've heard one of those songs! I can has excitement!
30th-Dec-2010 01:32 am (UTC)
Seriously, Robert Plant didn't make any of these lists?
30th-Dec-2010 08:55 am (UTC)
That is a very US centric poll really. My favourite song was I like by the Divine comedy a band form Northern Ireland. The best album was Muse 'the Resistance' bomb of an album :D. I ve only listened to what the radio gave me this year and half of it not even , but I prefer british nonetheless.

fyi heres a ukcentric view of things by the NME:

Now Muse I've heard of! :-) I think I bought 2 songs from their album, but was hoping my daughter would buy the album and share it with me. :-)

Question #1: I've never even heard of any of those albums except the Arcade Fire one. I was interested in it, but haven't heard enough of it to say whether I liked it or not.

Question #2: I hadn't heard of any of those albums either, not even the Bruce Springsteen one.

Question #3: I've also never heard of most of these albums-, but I purchased one song from the Santana album and I really love it. Apparently I like the "worst" music. heh

Question #4: I've never heard of most of those albums, but I did buy a couple of songs from the Miley Cyrus album. I'm not a huge fan, but I read something about her album somewhere (not really a compliment), so I was curious about it and bought a couple of songs to check them out. (I don't hate the songs, but also haven't really listened to them much.)

The list of songs: I had heard of a few of them. I liked Katy Perry's first album somewhat (though it didn't last long as far as listening to it), but didn't really like that song. I dislike Lady Gaga completely (just not my type of music, am not a fan of her in general). I have the Lady Antebellum song, and it's just okay. I'm not a fan of country music, but when that first song came out, I kind of liked it, so bought it. I don't really listen to it anymore. I think I know the Michael Buble song also, from Top 20 Video Countdown.

It was tough for me to answer the write-in questions. I was looking through my iTunes to see which 2010 albums I bought, and there were only 8 and none of them are really spectacular. If I had to choose a favorite--the one I've listened to the most, perhaps, I'd say 10 Years - Feeding the Wolves.

If I go by the last 12 months (LastFM), though, the artists I've most listened to are:

Alice in Chains (290)
Red (234)
The Fray (202)
10 Years (160)
Lifehouse (127)
The Rolling Stones (126)
The Beatles (126)
Coldplay (106)
Augustana (105)
Disturbed (103)
Three Days Grace (94)
OneRepublic (94)
Chevelle (90)
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (90)
Collective Soul (89)

Songs:

The Fray - You Found Me (57)
Red - Death of Me (54)
The Fray - Never Say Never (54)
Red - Fight Inside (46)
Augustana - Hey Now (42)
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Pen and Paper (41)
Dashboard Confessional - Vindicated (39)
Chevelle - Jars (39)
The Fray - How to Save a Life (38)
Sick Puppies - You're Goin' Down (38)
Collective Soul - Welcome All Again (38)
Disturbed - The Night (36)
10 Years - Beautiful (35)
Red - Never Be the Same (31)
Collective Soul - Staring Down (30)

That doesn't really translate to specific albums, but I think 2010 wasn't the greatest year for music for me. :-)
