Behind the cut is a question spawned from a debate I saw between two criminologists who took opposing viewpoints on this subject. Sorry that the subject matter is such a downer.

Poll #1487430 Criminology Question

Do you believe that accessing child pornography makes paedophiles more likely or less likely to act out on their impulses against children?

More likely
Less likely
I have no idea
Something else (what?)

I choose more likely because I know when I watch or look at the type of porn I enjoy it makes me want to find some one in real life to screw more than if, let's say I was just thinking about sex.

I think it just totally depends on the person. Some people are more prone to act on fantasies than others

THIS! they may do it because they see it, or they may not do it, because they were thinking about it and watching it made it go away

More likely: By viewing the pornography, the reason to distribute child pornography is perpetuated and thus more people act on the impulses, thus doing the damage regardless if the viewee is actually doing the physical act or not.

I think that it can go either way... some pedophiles have their impulses satiated by porn, whereas others come to the point where porn no longer fulfills the urge, and they need to more to acts of abuse.

But since the creation of child porn constitutes an act of child abuse, it's safe to say that whether or not child porn may deter some offenders, it's still horrendous.

I've seen some of the research, and what I saw is very conflicted on this point. Instinctual answer is more, but not in a statistically significant way.

I have no idea.

Though, I'd say that it would depend on the person. Some people like to fantasize about certain things, but that doesn't mean they'd actually do them.

For instance I like Furry porn, but I don't want to fuck animals. :/

However, if they were to be able to access child pornography that means that a child was abused to make said porn. So regardless of if it would keep some pedos away from kids it's still something that shouldn't be done.

I could imagine having your sexual abuse recorded and enjoyed by others would be far worse than just regular sexual abuse.

Was it a debate about virtual child porn?

Anyway, I think it can depend. For some people it might satisfy the urge, for others it might legitimize the act.
