Supreme Courting

Today President Obama nominated New York appellate court Judge Sonia Sotomayer to fill the pending vacancy in the US Supreme Court. Behind the cut is a poll about this appointment and about some issues concerning the Supreme Court. If you'd like, I've also added a 7 minute youtube link of Judge Sotomayer's acceptance speech at the press conference.

In an episode of the West Wing, the fictional President Bartlet decides that it's better to have members of the court with extreme views rather than a court composed of those with moderate, middle-of the-road views. He says that this is because great social change comes from those who are passionate rather than from those who are compromisers. As between these two approaches, which do you thing is better?

A court composed of judges who are comproming moderates
