The other night my brother and were discussing how we feel about fictional characters, and we didn't agree at all. He relates to them very much on a realistic level. If they have undesirable qualities, he hates them; only if they're an essentially nice person will he like them. Take Doctor Who, for example. He doesn't like the Master, because the Master is evil. I, on the other hand, would list the Master among my favourite characters. Or look at Red Dwarf. Rimmer: cowardly and a complete stickler for the rules; my favourite character, but a continual annoyance to my brother. And then there's the matter of their treatment. I love to see my favourite characters abused. I mean, no, I don't want to see anyone get their head stuck in a meat grinder or have their throat slit, but I do quite enjoy seeing people roughed up a bit (only in fiction, I should point out). But my brother sees them like real people and therefore doesn't want them getting hurt. Unless they're evil, in which case he's quite happy to see them blown to smithereens.
So my brother thinks I'm weird, and I think he is. I'm sure more people are like me than he imagines, so I thought a poll might settle this. I know LJ's population is probably skewed to my advantage because of all the fandom activity, but at the very least this should prove I'm not alone on this (and/or prove he's not alone on this. That's all up to you lot, of course).
For question one, think about how you'd get along with your least and most favourite fictional characters in real life. Consider all pertinent factors, including whether they're at all evil. You may think your favourite genocidal character has a cool personality, but you probably wouldn't like them much if they were trying to blow up the planet, so be realistic here.
My preferences with regards to characters correspond to how I think we'd get along in real life...
How do you feel when something bad (abduction, wounding, being reduced to tears, etc.) happens to one of your favourite characters (assuming it's not too gruesome or something that will result in their exit from the proceedings)?
How do you feel when something bad (abduction, wounding, being reduced to tears, etc.) happens to a character you don't like (assuming it's not gruesome enough to upset you)?
To summarise, I broadly feel the same way as:
