Conscience vs. Polls

My friend Tyler and I got into an argument a while back about how elected politicians should vote.

It was his point of view that politicians should vote according to how a majority of their constituents want them to vote because they are elected as a representative of the people. After all, it is supposed to be a representative system.

I disagreed with him. I think that there are times when what is right is not always the same as what is popular and at those times you have to vote according to your conscience. To me leadership means more than just following the polls.

What do you think?

If you were an elected official, and on a question that you had to vote on, the wishes of a majority of your constituents differed from your own conscience, how would you vote?

I would vote according to the wishes of a majority of my constituents
I would vote according to my conscience
