I'm curious as to how other people use the entry tracking feature of the Message Center/ESN

Poll #949772 message center stuff

Do you use ESN to track new entries to people's journals?

yes
16(38.1%)
no
26(61.9%)

Do you ever find yourself signing up to track new entries from a journal rather than friending them?

yeah, quite a lot
3(7.3%)
yeah, sometimes
7(17.1%)
no
31(75.6%)

if you said yes to the above: what are the reasons behind this?

there's no pressure to comment if they don't know i'm watching
0(0.0%)
a lot of their journal is boring, via tracking I can subscribe to only entries with certain tags
0(0.0%)
I don't want them to know I'm reading them
1(9.1%)
they're someone I wouldn't comment on/interact with if I did friend them
0(0.0%)
it's less pressure in general
0(0.0%)
I only track them to provide secondary-to-my-flist, occasional reading material
0(0.0%)
they have a huge flist I know me friending them will mean nothing
0(0.0%)
they're big and scary and my journal is lame/boring/uncool
0(0.0%)
other (please comment)
1(9.1%)

of those people you track rather than friend, would you have friended them before ESN?

yes
1(6.2%)
no
8(50.0%)
it varies from case to case
7(43.8%)

I read entries I've tracked:

in the message center
4(16.7%)
in the person's journal
11(45.8%)
either
9(37.5%)

my approx. number of *overall* subscriptions is:

<10
20(60.6%)
10-20
6(18.2%)
20-30
1(3.0%)
30-50
2(6.1%)
50+
2(6.1%)
none of your business
2(6.1%)

and then there's the question I couldn't really phrase for a poll question which is: what do you think of ESN overall? Do you think it's good because it allows you to distinguish between people you actually want to be friends with and people you just want to watch? Do you think it damages the social aspect of the site by allowing you to be a silent watcher? Do you think it's a little creepy that people could be subscribing to your journal right now? Would you ever want a "You have X subscriptions to your journal" counter thingy? Other general thoughts?
