The only caveat being that my cats and husband count as beings that would be saved from the fire and not as possessions (in the context of this question). If either of those were to be lost in the fire I'd choose to lose everything online in a heartbeat.

Any living beings will be rescued from the fire. :)

Then everything physical in my home (with a few exceptions that I would obviously be devastated to lose) is replaceable. Much of my data on the Internet is not.

I have renter's insurance and this says nothing about my dog being in the fire.

Right, assume your dog* is safe. Maybe you were out on a walk at the time.
(*and all other pets, generally speaking, which we will pretend were housed elsewhere at the time of the fire for argument's sake)

Definitely the apartment then. :)

Wouldn't I lose said backed up copies in the fire? ;)

? The second option is more of a "what if the internet went 'splodey" option. Whereas in the first scenario, anything on the internet would still be safe.

My hard drive crashed once and I lost everything and survived it, so I could survive it again.

We have home owners insurance, but there are some things in our home that just couldn't be replaced.

That being said, as long as my husband, daughter and our two kitty cats survived, we would get through it.

Even with insurance, there are just too many things that I just wouldn't be able to replace. Journals, heirlooms, sentimental items... Losing online things would suck (I have back-ups for some, but not all), but I would get over it a heck of a lot quicker.
