My life has always been awkward because I'm a big crier, public vs. private being of no consequence, and I've always been exceptionally grateful to people who reach out...and yet, when I see other people crying, I freeze up in total helplessness and have no idea what to do. I always think I'll come across looking like an idiot if I try to imitate what other people have done.

Nothing makes me cry like pet death, though. Doesn't even have to be one I know personally. Give me two minutes to think about putting a dog to sleep and the waterworks start.

I'm terrible at helping people. :/ I mean, I'm a good listener, but when it comes to trying to make a person feel better it's best if I just leave them alone.

If I see a stranger on the street crying, I would most likely not get involved because of the reason most people would not get involved in a stranger's business, whether it be crying or whatnot -- because you really don't know what you're going to get yourself into.

That is the most likely scenerio. There is a small chance I would get involved if it appeared to be a situation that clearly would not get me involved in some kind of deep shit -- like getting me killed or having some psycho now involved in my life in some way.

Sounds cold but I believe this is truely what most people would do.

Now, if we were in some kind of group danger situation, like being attacked by warring aliens or something, I feel I would get involved.

I avoid crying strangers. I am embarrassed as hell to cry in public, so the secondhand embarrassment just wouldn't allow me to interact with them at all.

I picked "after receiving a gift" because there was a stretch of a few years where I cried every time I had a birthday for reasons that I couldn't quite identify. ...But gifts were involved?

I recently was in the situation that I was crying in public. I think this is an interesting poll with interesting comments because it made no sense to me that no one asked what was wrong or whatever. I didn't even remotely cross my mind that they might just be trying not to offend me and considering that, the fact that the poll participants who know that they would want others to talk to them in such a situation makes sense.

I'm pregnant right now. I cry for now discernible reason almost daily :)

Whether or not I'd approach them depends on the situation. If something seems obviously wrong(like their grocery bags ripped and food was rolling all over, or they are injured) then I'd help them. If they're just standing there crying then I'd probably walk by as I have no idea how to help people in emotional distress. I'd probably just make it worse for them.

Anytime I've ever cried in public it's because of overwhelmed senses(I'm autistic) so someone trying to help me would just make it much worse. I would most likely say random words and run away and hide somewhere.
