Are political parties a good idea?

Poll #1622267 No Party

George Washington, in his farewell address, warned about the danger of having political parties (as opposed to a bunch of independents who reached consensus.) Obviously no one listened to poor old George. Do you think a political system without political parties is workable today?

Sure, why not?

I can see some problems with it, but it would be better than what we have now.
18(36.7%)
I'm not sure.
5(10.2%)
It would fix some problems, but probably create even more.
14(28.6%)
This sounds nice, but it is really a bad idea

Call me a derphead, but when I saw the title of this entry, I thought that, by "political parties," you meant something entirely different. ^^;;;;;

Needless to say, I probably am not qualified to answer this poll, am I? XD;;;;;;;;

I think having a party system is fine -- the problem is that in the US, at least, people only really pay attention to/legitimize two parties. If we had six or seven all with the same amount of oomph, and with a wider variety of ideas and platforms than the Dems and Republicans (both of whom, let's be honest, tend to run the gamut on the political spectrum, crossing over and blending together on different issues), I think we'd be better off.

There's no party I feel I fit into let alone fully identify with, so I don't see a reason why a lack of labeling would make anything worse.
