Finding Expensive Clothes

Hypothetical situation: you're walking down a street at night. All of a sudden you find, lying on the sidewalk, a brand new pair of expensive designer jeans. They happen to be in your size and they're definitely something you'd love to own for yourself. Assume that they appear new, clean and undamaged. There are no houses around, and no indication as to who they might belong to. Assume that there is no one else around and that you can pick them up and take them home without being seen by anyone.

I doubt seriously that I'd even get to the point where I know what size they are or whether they're clean or not. If I see clothing out on the ground, I leave it where it's at in case the owner retraces his or her steps so that hopefully the person can find his or her missing clothing.

Ditto. :)

Same here!

Precisely.

I'd probably ask loudly if the jeans belong to anyone before grabbing them.

Heh, yeah, if it's more than a buck I've been known to yell "hey, anyone drop a fiver!"

I suppose someone could lie, but at least I'd made an effort.

I come from a family of scavengers. My dad pulled a toy out of someone's trash once and repaired it for me, so. I probably wouldn't blink. I'm not into designer undies, though, so maybe not on those more for that reason than the "ew, undies" thing.

Yep, this. I once found an entire case of unopened jelly beans on the side of the road and had absolutely no hesitation grabbing a bunch of the sealed bags for myself.

Undies? Definitely not, although I did answer "I'm not sure." Who knows what kind of STDs or diseases the owner was running around with inside those things? I have to assume it's something that won't wash out in the laundry just to play it safe.

in the case of the jeans I would take them home and put up flyers for them in the area. if the owner wanted them back I'd have to see a receipt.

the undies I would leave there.

nah , I don't trust any thing thats on the streets... really.

The jeans likely have had more contact with other people than the undies as generally one cannot try on undies. (I'm assuming we're talking bottoms.) If I have no problem picking up the brand new, unused jeans then I don't see why I'd have a problem with brand new, unused undies.
