I am one of three daughters, and I'm always surprised to hear my family being described as a "large" family -- there's only five of us! But when I went out West, it seemed like everyone had three or more children in a family -- we were average or small! I'm curious to see how common this is.

I have three siblings, and am equally confused when we're called a large family. I grew up with several 10+ kid families around us... THAT'S big.

Also, do please LJ-cut this, it's rather big.

My dad is from a family with 8 children, so I think our 3-child family is small. :-P I think it's all relative!

I'm one of three daughters myself, but we've never been described as a "large" family. Large is like 4 kids or more. More than 6 is just getting ridiculous.

I have two brothers which makes three of us, but if I have to count my step-sisters, that makes 5. I don't know my step-sisters at all as they live four hours away and we never talk, so I don't include them in my family. They are just the daughters' of the man my mom married.

I count "my family" as being my two immediate sisters and myself (3 kids). I don't count my half-siblings as siblings because I rarely see them (they are from my dad's first marriage and all grown up).

Nope, we're small. Just me and my mom. No father or other siblings.

I live in Utah, the land of a zillion kids. It seems like average here is 5 or 6 kids, but I answered in terms of...what I think is American society's average, I guess?

I'm from Germany and living in the US. So for me it depends on country context.

In Germany a regular-sized family has 1 child, maybe 2. 3 would be "larger", 4 and up would be "large" these days, bordering on slightly strange. When my parents were kids, having 4 children was pretty normal/average. Now this number is 1-2.

In US context it seems to me like 2-3 children are average.
