Recently I was thinking of the abbreviation "LOL". It used to be that when you typed it, it was because you were *actually* laughing out loud. But does it mean that any more?

Poll #1505948 Do you Laugh Out Loud?

When you type "LOL" in a conversation, are you *actually* laughing out loud?

Yes. I don't type it unless I'm actually laughing outwardly.
6(5.8%)
I'm always giggling or chuckling outwardly when I type it, if not outright laughing.
13(12.6%)
If it causes me to snort, that counts as an "LOL" for me.
8(7.8%)
I'm always laughing/giggling/chuckling internally, but not usually outwardly so.
30(29.1%)
Not outwardly, but I usually do so internally - though not always.
27(26.2%)
No, usually I'm not doing so either internally or outwardly; it's just a word in my vocabulary.
5(4.9%)
Other - plase comment.
14(13.6%)

Do you make a distinction between "LOL" in upper case, and "lol" in lower case?

Yes; I consider "LOL" (upper case) to be a stronger variant.
51(49.0%)
Yes; I consider "lol" (lower case) to be a stronger variant.
2(1.9%)
Yes, but only in that I consider the upper case usage wrong and therefore meaningless.
2(1.9%)
Yes, but only in that I consider the lower case usage wrong and therefore meaningless.
1(1.0%)
No, I consider them to be the same.
44(42.3%)
Other - plase comment.
4(3.8%)

Do you string together your LOLs, as in "LOLOLOL"?

Yes, all the time.
1(1.0%)
Yes, most of the time.
2(1.9%)
Yes, but only when something is especially funny.
39(37.1%)
No.
60(57.1%)

14(13.3%)
"Lawls"
2(1.9%)

36(34.3%)

I once saw a rather inept lawyer who believed that a man who ended an email with LOL was flirting, because the lawyer thought that LOL meant "lots of love".

I sometimes use "lol" whenever things are awkward. Most of the time, though, I'm laughing at least inwardly.

I say lol as both "ell oh ell" and "loll". XP

lol indicates I'm amused, but not necessarily laughing. Anything that gets a major laugh gets a lmao or a lmfao.

You are deeelightful!
1st-Jan-2010 09:41 pm (UTC)
Sometimes I actually laugh out loud, sometimes not.

I only use LOLOLOL and the like when something is especially silly/ridiculous or unexpected. I don't know if anyone else makes this distinction, though :\.

In game I type lol all the time; most users can't be bothered to use proper capitalization, punctuation, etc., including myself. I'm one of the minority that uses proper grammar and spelling though.

Yeah, sometimes it depends. Sometimes I'm actually laughing when I type it, but more often, I'm not (but am chuckling inwardly). I also pronounce it all three ways, depending on current whim (unlike "FAQ," which I'll ALWAYS pronounce as "fack").

I have to agree on the crossed out content :P

"Loll" is how I say it in my head, but I would never say it out loud.
1st-Jan-2010 11:39 pm (UTC)

This!
2nd-Jan-2010 01:24 am (UTC)
I pretty much never type lol in coversation or posts.
2nd-Jan-2010 02:44 am (UTC)
That's me too. I "haha" more than anything.
2nd-Jan-2010 08:20 am (UTC)
Me, too. For some reason LOL has always annoyed me.

Hawkeye & Trapper! ♥

I only use "lol" in a sardonic manner. If I'm seriously laughing out loud I go for a good ol' "BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA" instead.
2nd-Jan-2010 10:18 am (UTC)
If I literally say, verbally, then I pronounce 'lol' as 'lawl'. Most of the time it depends on the situation on whether I read it as 'el oh el' or 'lawl'. Typically, people will put 'lawl' if they want that there. xD
2nd-Jan-2010 11:37 am (UTC)
Sometimes I'm laughing out loud, sometimes I'm grinning inside. Sometimes I use LOL instead of lol because I want to also use an exclamation mark and with my bad eyesight (which of course I assume everyone else has too) I can't see the mark next to the small letter 'l', it looks like lolll instead. Well, sort of.

I never ever type lololololol or LOLOLOLOLOL (or any variants). If I'm that seriously overcome I ROFLMAO instead!
2nd-Jan-2010 04:41 pm (UTC)
To be honest, I find "lol" to be completely annoying and I never type it ... ever.
2nd-Jan-2010 08:52 pm (UTC)
I have swtiched to saying haha now, and if it's really funny, bahahaha.... its probably a Michigan thing!
